Understanding the Platinum Spot Price

The chart above plots the LBMA Platinum Price, the global benchmark for platinum pricing. The London Bullion Market Association publishes this price twice daily (AM and PM fix) based on electronic auctions among accredited market makers. The PM fix, shown here, is the most widely referenced benchmark in the industry.

Platinum is one of the rarest precious metals on Earth, roughly 15 to 20 times scarcer than gold in terms of annual mine production. Its unique physical and chemical properties make it indispensable across several industries. Catalytic converters in diesel vehicles rely on platinum to reduce harmful emissions, and hydrogen fuel cells use platinum catalysts to generate clean energy. The metal also holds a long tradition in fine jewelry, valued for its density, luster, and hypoallergenic qualities.

Spot price represents the cost of one troy ounce of platinum for immediate settlement. It does not include dealer premiums, fabrication costs, or shipping. When you buy physical platinum from a dealer, you pay the spot price plus a premium that covers minting, distribution, and the dealer's margin.

Use our premium calculator to determine the markup on any platinum product, or visit the premium tracker to compare real dealer prices side by side.
