Reading the Table

The spot price of gold is quoted per troy ounce of pure metal. Almost nothing people own is pure: jewellery is 10K to 22K, and even bullion coins like the American Gold Eagle are 22K with copper and silver added for hardness. The table converts the London fix into the value of the gold inside an item at each purity, per gram, per pennyweight (the unit US jewellers and pawn shops quote), per troy ounce and per kilo.

Karat is purity in twenty-fourths. 14K is 14/24, or 58.3% gold, so a gram of 14K contains 0.583 g of gold and is worth 58.3% of the pure-gold price. Fineness says the same thing in parts per thousand: 585 stamped inside a ring means 14K, 750 means 18K, 999 means pure.

What Gold Buyers Actually Pay Per Gram

The table is melt value, not an offer. Scrap gold has to be tested, refined and resold, and the buyer takes on the price risk between purchase and refining, so cash offers for jewellery and dental gold usually land between 70% and 90% of melt. Small quantities at a pawn shop sit at the low end; a refiner buying several ounces from a jeweller sits at the high end. The calculator shows that band next to the melt figure so you know what a fair offer looks like before you walk in.

Bullion is different. Coins and bars are already assayed, so dealers buy them back at or slightly below spot and sell them at a premium above it. If you are selling coins rather than jewellery, our guide to how to sell gold covers dealer buyback quotes, and the premium tracker shows what dealers charge above spot to sell the same coins.

Before You Sell: Confirm the Karat and the Weight

Two numbers decide the value: purity and weight. Check the hallmark with a loupe, and weigh the piece yourself on a 0.01 g scale, because an unscrupulous buyer can shade either. Stones, clasps and steel springs are not gold and are deducted. If a piece has no stamp, a scratch-stone acid kit tells you the karat in a minute; our testing guide explains each method.

Why the 14K Price Per Gram Matters Most

14K is the standard for everyday gold jewellery sold in the United States, which is why "14k gold price per gram" is searched far more than any other karat. Most class rings, chains, wedding bands and bracelets bought at mall jewellers are 14K; 18K is more common in fine jewellery and imports from Europe and Asia; 22K dominates jewellery from India, the Gulf and parts of Southeast Asia, where it is bought partly as savings.

Because 14K is only 58.3% gold, the per-gram value is a little more than half the pure-gold price. A 5-gram 14K ring at today's fix contains $414.02 of gold; a 20-gram 18K chain contains $2,129.38. Those figures move every day with spot, which is why this page recalculates from the LBMA fix rather than quoting a number that goes stale.

Where the Price Comes From

The London Bullion Market Association publishes a gold price twice each trading day, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, set by an electronic auction among major banks. It is the benchmark that refiners, central banks and most retail dealers price against. This page uses the most recent fix; the live gold price chart shows the full history back to 1968, and the melt value calculator handles coins by weight and purity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of 14K gold per gram today?

At the current LBMA fix of $4,415.40 per troy ounce, 14K gold (58.3% pure) is worth $82.80 per gram in metal content. A jewellery buyer or refiner typically offers 70–90% of that figure; a jewellery store charges several times it for a finished piece.

How do you calculate gold price per gram?

Divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1035 to get the price of pure gold per gram, then multiply by the purity. For 14K, multiply by 0.583; for 18K by 0.750; for 10K by 0.417. The table on this page does that for every karat using the latest London fix.

Why is the price per gram different from what a buyer offers?

The table shows melt value: what the gold inside is worth at spot. A buyer has to refine it, assay it, carry the price risk and make a margin, so cash offers for scrap run roughly 70–90% of melt depending on quantity and buyer. Bullion coins and bars sell much closer to melt because they need no refining.

Is the gold price per gram the same everywhere?

Spot gold is a single global price in US dollars, set by trading in London and New York. Local prices per gram differ only by currency conversion, taxes and dealer margins. Prices quoted per gram in India, the UAE or the UK are the same metal at a different exchange rate.

What is a pennyweight (dwt)?

A pennyweight is one-twentieth of a troy ounce, 1.555 grams. US jewellers and pawn shops often quote scrap gold per dwt. Multiply a per-gram price by 1.555 to convert.

How often does this page update?

The spot price comes from the LBMA morning and afternoon fixes and is refreshed twice on every trading day. The date and time of the fix in use is shown above the table.
