Why Tungsten, Not Lead or Copper?

Lead and copper are the usual substitutes in cheap fakes, and they fail a basic consistency check. Lead’s density is 11.34 g/cm3. Copper’s is 8.96. Gold’s is 19.32. A lead-core or copper-core bar that matches gold’s published dimensions will be light. One that matches gold’s weight will be too thick. That is why a precision scale plus calipers still catches most base-metal fakes.

Tungsten is the exception. Tungsten’s density (19.25 g/cm3) is nearly identical to gold’s (19.32 g/cm3). The gap is about 0.07 g/cm3. That is why a scale-only check is unreliable if the dimensions also match. A well-machined tungsten core, wrapped in a gold shell of the right thickness, can hit both the published weight and the published outline at the same time. The scale reads what the spec says. The calipers agree. You have not authenticated the bar.

This is a bar problem more than a thin-coin problem. A 1 oz coin is only a few millimeters thick. There is not much room for a substantial tungsten insert once you leave a gold shell thick enough to look right and to survive a surface scratch. A 10 oz bar, a kilo, or anything larger has the volume to hide a core inside a convincing gold envelope. The larger the bar, the more room there is to hide the substitution.

The 2012 Manhattan 10 oz Case

Documented cases of tungsten-filled gold bars have surfaced, including a widely reported 2012 incident involving a 10 oz gold bar discovered in Manhattan. Confirmed cases remain rare relative to the volume of gold traded globally.

That is the public record this page will use. We are not adding a dealer name, a dollar loss, or a court outcome. The case is useful because it shows the construction is possible, not because it describes a common product on major-dealer shelves.

The risk is heavily concentrated in secondary market transactions: private sales, flea markets, estate sales, and online marketplaces. Counterfeits purchased from major, established dealers are extraordinarily rare because reputable dealers test incoming inventory systematically. We are not claiming tungsten-core bars are common at those dealers. They are not.

What a Tungsten-Core Bar Can Pass

A tungsten-core gold bar can pass weight, dimension, magnet, and visual inspection. That is the point of the construction. Walk through each layer so you know what a passing result actually means.

Visual inspection. A competent shell looks like gold because the outer metal is gold. Color, stamp quality, and assay-card printing can all be copied well enough to pass a naked-eye check. Visual inspection still catches crude fakes. It does not catch a well-made tungsten core.

Magnet. Tungsten is not ferromagnetic. Neither is gold. A passing magnet test only rules out iron and steel. Copper, lead, and tungsten all pass. If the magnet does not stick, you have ruled out the cheapest fakes. You have not authenticated the bar.

Weight and dimensions. This is where the 0.07 g/cm3 gap matters. Lead and copper force a tradeoff: match the weight and the bar is the wrong size, or match the size and the bar is the wrong weight. Tungsten does not force that tradeoff. A tungsten-core bar built to the published spec will often match both. Weight plus calipers still matter for base-metal fakes. Acid. Acid is a surface and near-surface karat test. A gold shell thick enough that the scratch never reaches the core will test as gold, because the streak on the stone is gold. Acid does not prove a core. It tells you what you scratched.

XRF. XRF measures surface composition only (typically 10–50 micrometers). A gold-plated or gold-shelled tungsten bar reads as gold. Do not call XRF a tungsten detector. Combine it with a bulk test. Surface gold plus a passing XRF reading is consistent with a genuine bar and with a tungsten-core bar. The instrument cannot tell you which.

None of those results is a waste. Each one rules something else out. None of them, alone or stacked with the others in this section, rules tungsten out.

What Actually Catches It

Three things catch a tungsten core: a bulk electromagnetic test, an ultrasound test, and provenance. Specific gravity sits on the edge. It is not a reliable tungsten catch.

Sigma Metalytics. The Sigma Precious Metal Verifier measures bulk electromagnetic properties / resistivity. Gold is about 2.44 microohm-cm. Tungsten is about 5.65. The field penetrates a gold shell, so the composite reading falls outside the range for gold. That is why a tungsten-core bar will fail a Sigma Metalytics test even when weight, dimensions, magnet, acid, and XRF all pass. The device stays editorial on this page. Ultrasound. Sound travels at different speeds through tungsten and gold. An ultrasound test of a bar measures that transit through the thickness. A tungsten core produces a reading that does not match gold. This is a shop or assay tool, not a home-kit pick. We are not naming a consumer SKU or a price. If you take a bar of unknown provenance to a coin shop or an assay office, this is one of the bulk tests they can run.

Specific gravity. Gold’s specific gravity is 19.32. Tungsten’s is 19.25. A careful SG test may be marginal. Air bubbles, surface tension, and scale resolution all sit in the same neighborhood as that 0.07 gap. A careful SG test is not a reliable tungsten catch. It remains excellent for lead, copper, and brass.

Provenance. The most reliable defense is provenance: buy from a reputable source with unbroken chain of custody. Testing is what you do when the chain is broken or was never there. If you only buy from major dealers who test incoming inventory, the risk you are managing is the later secondary-market bar, not the original invoice.

Home Stack vs Shop Tools

At home, start with weight and dimensions. The AWS SC-2KGA ($25–40) is a reliable entry-level scale used by many coin dealers. Ohaus Scout models ($50–80) offer higher precision and durability. Pair either with digital calipers. Do not pretend a $30 scale finds tungsten. A matching weight on a matching outline is exactly what a tungsten-core bar is built to produce. The scale still earns its keep: it catches the base-metal fakes that miss the spec.

Shop tools are Sigma and ultrasound. A local coin shop or assay office that already authenticates incoming metal will have one or both. XRF at a shop is useful for surface composition. It is not a substitute for a bulk test on a bar.

If you only buy from major dealers and never buy from individuals, you do not need to own a Sigma. The counterfeit guide already says that. A verifier becomes worth the cost when you buy from secondary sources with any regularity, and when a single bad bar would be expensive to absorb. We are not setting a dollar threshold for “large.”
